.: At the Show Site
Many of us spend
so much time preparing our students for the actual performance,
we forget that there are several steps we can take on the
day of the show to keep our performers prepared and confident.
1. Check-In –
When you arrive at the show site, check in at the “check-in”
table. That way if you end up being a little late to the ready
door, the contest director will know that you are indeed on
campus vs. being a “no show”. If you are late
to the contest and arrive within a half-hour of your performance
time, go directly to the sound table inside the gym and/or
find the contest host and check in personally with him or
her.
2. Walk Through and
Around the Gym – Sometimes, due to unforeseen circumstances,
the footpath and gymnasium set-up is different from what is
posted on the web. Do a walk through and familiarize yourself
with the entrance and exit and the floor set-up. This will
give you time readjust your floor on your floor cart if necessary.
3. Sound Check –
Before the show and during the breaks, the announcer will
set aside time to do sound checks. If your music begins very
quietly or if you are using a newly burned cd (and do make
sure you bring more than one copy), it is a good idea to check
and make sure your music is working and is at the volume you
and your performers are comfortable with.
4. Turn in Your Music
Early – Even if you choose not to do a sound check,
it is a good idea to take a moment and turn in your music
well in advance of your performance time. This can help avoid
a possible delay of contest penalty and that awkward announcement,
“Will a staff member of XYZ High School please come
to the sound table.”
5. Spiel Sheet –
Take a moment and write up a spiel sheet to be turned in with
your music. You can find the form on the website. This will
give the audience a little more info about your unit and will
make your performers feel special.
We are all nervous
when our students perform and they can feel that anxiety from
us. Do yourselves and them a favor and take the above steps
to make yourself feel more comfortable with the flow of the
contest. A happier you will help your performers relax and
concentrate on their real job…..having a great show!
